Work Visa Extension in Mozambique: What Foreign Workers Should Know
If you are working in Mozambique and your work visa is approaching expiration, there are a few things you should prepare before starting the process.
In Maputo, visa-related procedures are generally handled through SENAMI, the National Migration Service. Mozambique is welcoming, but administrative processes may feel slow, bureaucratic and confusing, especially during your first interaction with immigration authorities.
Before anything else: Boletim de Alojamento
Many foreigners discover this too late. If you enter Mozambique knowing you may need a visa extension, you should handle the accommodation registration, commonly referred to as Boletim de Alojamento.
This should normally be processed within approximately 5 days after arrival. Failure to do so may result in unnecessary fines later during immigration procedures.

Good news: someone can do it for you
You may delegate someone else to handle this process. You do not necessarily need to appear physically yourself, and the procedure is usually simple when properly guided.
Most importantly, keep the receipt or proof of the accommodation bulletin. Immigration authorities may request it during your visa extension process.
A small warning about Mozambican bureaucracy
Mozambican administrative systems can sometimes be slow, heavily procedural, poorly explained and occasionally frustrating.
In such moments, do not panic. When in doubt, ask questions politely to immigration officers. And if you are busy or wish to avoid unnecessary stress, delegating the process to an experienced consultant can be a wise decision.
A note on corruption
Some people may suggest shortcuts involving corruption to accelerate processes. While the temptation may appear unavoidable in bureaucratic environments, we strongly discourage such practices. Corruption damages institutions and contributes to many of the inefficiencies people complain about.
