Mozambique: Work visa extension guide (2026)

Did you know?

Mozambique is home to dozens of Bantu languages

Portuguese is the official language, but many Mozambicans also speak local Bantu languages such as Emakhuwa/Makua, Changana and Sena.

Food curiosity

In some northern regions, insects are part of traditional gastronomy

Local food traditions vary widely across the country, and in some communities edible insects are appreciated as seasonal protein-rich delicacies.

Big fact

Mozambique has one of Africa’s longest coastlines

With more than 2,000 km of Indian Ocean coastline, Mozambique is deeply connected to seafood, islands, beaches and maritime culture.

Work Visa Extension in Mozambique: What Foreign Workers Should Know

If you are working in Mozambique and your work visa is approaching expiration, there are a few things you should prepare before starting the process.

In Maputo, visa-related procedures are generally handled through SENAMI, the National Migration Service. Mozambique is welcoming, but administrative processes may feel slow, bureaucratic and confusing, especially during your first interaction with immigration authorities.

Handle accommodation registration early
Keep all receipts and proofs
Prepare authenticated copies
Expect queues and delays

Before anything else: Boletim de Alojamento

Many foreigners discover this too late. If you enter Mozambique knowing you may need a visa extension, you should handle the accommodation registration, commonly referred to as Boletim de Alojamento.

This should normally be processed within approximately 5 days after arrival. Failure to do so may result in unnecessary fines later during immigration procedures.

Documents usually needed for Boletim de Alojamento

Residence declaration signed by the owner of the property where you are staying.
Notarized/authenticated copy of the property owner’s identification document.
Copy of your passport or identification document.
Copy of your visa.
Copy of your latest entry stamp into Mozambique.
Authentication/notarization of the required copies.

Good news: someone can do it for you

You may delegate someone else to handle this process. You do not necessarily need to appear physically yourself, and the procedure is usually simple when properly guided.

Most importantly, keep the receipt or proof of the accommodation bulletin. Immigration authorities may request it during your visa extension process.

A small warning about Mozambican bureaucracy

Mozambican administrative systems can sometimes be slow, heavily procedural, poorly explained and occasionally frustrating.

Long queues
Limited information
Repeated document requests

In such moments, do not panic. When in doubt, ask questions politely to immigration officers. And if you are busy or wish to avoid unnecessary stress, delegating the process to an experienced consultant can be a wise decision.

A note on corruption

Some people may suggest shortcuts involving corruption to accelerate processes. While the temptation may appear unavoidable in bureaucratic environments, we strongly discourage such practices. Corruption damages institutions and contributes to many of the inefficiencies people complain about.
