Things to do in Maputo

WHAT TO DO

Visiting Maputo, recently moved here, or simply looking for nice ideas? You are at the right place. Maputo is small, but surprisingly warm and vibrant when you know where to go.

Start with a local tour

A walking tour is one of the best ways to understand Maputo quickly. You'll learn the city’s history and local habits before exploring on your own.

We created our tours for people like you, people who want to see beyond the surface. See our tours here.

Eating out

Food is one of the softest ways to enter Maputo’s social life. Start simple, then go deeper as you get comfortable.

Local food and crafts

FEIMA (Parque dos Continuadores)

FEIMA is perfect for crafts, capulana clothes, paintings and slow wandering. Inside, Graciana is a good stop for very Mozambican flavours such as greens (coconut and peanut-based), seafood, Frango-a-zambeziana (grilled coconut chicken), etc. Bring mosquito repellent if you plan to stay long.

Thai food

Pekai’s Thai Pub and Restaurant

If you love Thai food, Pekai's is one of the best places to visit in Maputo! Located next to Terminus Hotel on Avenida Francisco O. Magumbwe. Nice atmosphere, delicious food, ice-cold-beer. It's one of the most welcoming places in town. Easy to find through Google maps.

Delicious Pizzas

Mundos Restaurant

One of the city's most popular spots for pizza. The menu is extensive, the atmosphere is lively. On major football or rugby days it can get very full, so arrive early if you want a table.

Sea air

Sagres and Costa do Sol

Sagres is relaxed and beach-facing next to Southern Sun hotel. They have great options on they menu! Costa do Sol restaurant is another classic seafood stop further north, ideal for a slow meal by the ocean.

Eat like a local

Mercado dos Pescadores

Choose fresh fish or seafood, buy by weight, then ask a stall to prepare it. It can take time, but that is part of the experience. If you stay far, make sure you have a flexible and trusted driver to make the visit easier.

Shopping and walking

Baía Mall and Marginal

Baía Mall is practical for shopping. The Marginal Avenue is also one of the best areas for walking, running and breathing sea air.

Traffic tip: Avenida da Marginal can be very congested on weekdays, especially early morning and late afternoon. If you have a fixed appointment, move earlier.

Out of town | Day Trips

When you want to leave the city mood behind, Maputo gives you beaches, rivers and wildlife.

Beach lunch

Macaneta

A strong option for lunch in front of the sea or nearby. When traffic helps, it can take about one hour from Maputo.

Horse riding

El Paso Macaneta

Known for horse rides, food and accommodation. Book ahead, especially for beach rides.

El Paso Facebook

Beach getaway

Ponta do Ouro

Good for beach restaurants, massage options, accommodation and a holiday mood. Quad bike prices vary, but keeping 1500–2000 meticais per hour as a rough expectation is safer.

Wildlife

Maputo National Park

No lions, but you may see elephants, giraffes, impalas and, with luck, hippos. A 4x4 is strongly recommended because internal roads are sandy.

Sunset add-on

Boat Rides and Maputo Bay Cruises

We can help connect you with sunset boat rides in Macaneta or cruises around Maputo Bay when available, making the booking smoother and safer.

Mangroves

Kayak Safaris

A beautiful option for nature lovers who want to explore mangroves, river channels and a quieter side of the region. We can help you organize it. We know the right people.

Active Life
