Mozambicans don't fear car accidents, they fear rain!

If you've spent enough time in Mozambique, particularly in busy urban areas, you've probably witnessed a curious phenomenon.

A pedestrian steps onto the road. A car approaches and the pedestrian notices the car.

The car notices the pedestrian, but neither changes course.

The pedestrian continues walking, as if he owns the road. The driver slows down, and accepts his fate.

Of course, this is an exaggeration meant for humor, but many locals will immediately understand the reference.

But, when the rain comes, I mean, just a light drizzle, suddenly, the streets transform.

The same people begin sprinting like Olympic athletes. Market vendors scramble to cover their goods. Shoppers disappear. Sidewalks empty. Bus shelters become overcrowded.
